CultCap: capturing objects with a phone

A series on building a capture app and Gaussian splat trainer that turns a walk around an object into 3D, for small museums, galleries and anyone with something worth keeping.

I’m building a way to turn a walk around an object into a 3D model, using just a phone. A sculpture in a regional gallery, an artefact in a historical society’s back room, the thing on the shelf that only has one flat photograph.

These posts follow along as I build it. Some explain how a piece of it works, some are about taking it out into the world, and plenty are about what went wrong.

If you’re new, start with Why I’m doing this, then see it in action at the Newcastle Art Gallery.
